Inadvertent Whistle After Interception, Clock Expires

authored by Heath Howard

Third and 4 on B's 24. The clock has one second remaining in the second quarter (or first half). The ball is snapped, and QB A-1 begins to scramble. Time expires. A-1 throws the ball and it is intercepted by B-2. Immediately following the interception, the back judge blows an inadvertent whistle while (i) B-2 is at B's 2; (ii) B-2 is in B's own end zone. What is/are the correct action(s) to take following this play?

In (i) and (ii), Team B has the option to either replay the down or take the result of the play. Replaying the down would give Team A the ball on B's 24, untimed third down. In (i), taking the result would give Team B the ball on B's 2, untimed first down. In (ii), taking the result would give Team B the ball on B's 14, untimed first down. A half can never end on an inadvertent whistle. The team with the most recent possession of the ball at the time the inadvertent whistle was blown is given the option of replaying the down or taking the result. Therefore, regardless of the option chosen, an untimed down will be granted.
